The Buy Box is now called the Featured Offer
Amazon refers to the prominent offer associated with Add to Cart and Buy Now as the Featured Offer. Amazon evaluates competing offers to determine which is most attractive to customers, and the Featured Offer can rotate among offers when no single offer is clearly more attractive. Amazon’s help page explains the current framework.
Seller count is a starting point
A listing with three sellers is not automatically safer than one with twelve. Demand may be much higher on the twelve-seller listing, while one seller may control nearly all of the Featured Offer on the three-seller listing.
Review the count together with demand, inventory depth where visible, fulfillment method, pricing behavior and historical changes.
Watch the direction of competition
Trends often matter more than snapshots. Rising seller count combined with falling price can indicate a crowding trade. Falling seller count with stable demand may improve the opportunity, although there may also be a reason sellers are leaving.
Ask what changed and whether that change is likely to continue.
Identify seller dominance
If one seller appears to win the Featured Offer almost continuously, investigate why. They may have a stronger price, faster delivery, deeper stock, or another advantage. Your expected share of sales may be much smaller than the total listing demand suggests.
Treat Amazon presence as a separate risk signal
When Amazon itself sells the product, study how often it is in stock, where it prices and what happens to third-party offers when Amazon returns. A listing can look attractive during an Amazon stockout and change quickly when Amazon replenishes.
Model price compression before buying
Assume another seller arrives and undercuts the current offer. Recalculate at a lower sale price. If the product remains acceptable, you have margin for normal competition. If the opportunity turns negative immediately, the risk is higher.
How Scout looks at it
Competition should be viewed alongside price history, demand and economics. Brellen’s goal is to help sellers see those signals together rather than use seller count as a standalone rule.
Frequently asked questions
How many sellers is too many?
There is no universal maximum. The relevant question is whether demand, pricing and likely Featured Offer share can support your inventory at acceptable economics.
What if one seller gets most of the Buy Box?
That can reduce the realistic sales opportunity for other sellers. Investigate the seller’s price, fulfillment method, stock and historical dominance before assuming total listing demand is available to you.
